Today we'd like to introduce you to Andrea Dicks. She's the sweet tooth behind One Bite at a Time. She makes cupcakes and other delicious treats. Things you might not know...she loves pygmy goats and knitting with fern green Briggs and Little Heritage wool.
So Andrea...
Q: Where are you from?
A: St. John's
Q: Why do you do what you do?
A: This could take a while....
a) I love cupcakes
b) it's an accomplishment to sculpt little sugary critters that will sit atop a cupcake. I love looking at the finished product. It's like a little edible piece of art.
c) it's a stress release! Creating the cupcakes is like a form of meditation for me.
Q: Who/what inspires you? (In relation to your craft? )
A: I'm most inspired by nature and my nephews. They're the ones who wanted to see whales and octopi on cupcakes.
Q: What is your favourite part of your process? What takes the longest?
A: My favourite part is also what takes the longest. Sculpting critters and flowers to decorate the cupcakes. It takes quite a bit of time to sculpt/mold them but it's totally worth it for me.
Q: What do you think craft means to NL?
A: Character. It think a lot of NL crafts add to and reflect the character of our province. The knitting with moose/puffins, trigger mitts, jewellery made from NL beach rocks, beauty products inspired by the sea, cupcakes with moose/ whales on them:-) .... the list goes on.
Q: Words to live by?
A: "Where there's a heartbeat, there's hope."
- not a clue who said this
Q: Do you have any pets?
A: I only have the cutest, sweetest little boy in existence, a shi tzu named Simon. (He's 7)
Q: What is your favourite food?
A: Chocolate covered strawberries. The perfect balance between good, bad and delicious.
